Let’s talk about the recent announcement from the University Grants Commission (UGC) about some universities in India. The UGC revealed that 20 universities in the country are “fake.” These universities are not authorized to give degrees to students.
Among them, eight are in Delhi. The UGC did this to protect students from attending unaccredited and fraudulent institutions. Students and parents should always check the accreditation of universities before enrolling.
The UGC secretary, Manish Joshi, stated that many institutions are giving degrees against the rules of the UGC Act. He emphasized that degrees from these universities are not recognized for higher education or employment.
These universities do not have the authority to award any degree.

Last year, the UGC had already published a list of 21 universities marked as “fake.” Some of them have appeared again this year. According to the UGC, universities can only grant degrees if they are established under certain Acts, recognized as deemed-to-be universities, or specifically authorized by an Act of Parliament. These rules ensure that degree-granting institutions have the necessary legal backing and can provide genuine qualifications to students.
In conclusion, we must be cautious and distinguish genuine universities from deceptive ones. With the UGC’s efforts and our awareness, we can protect the sanctity of education and build a better future for students in India.
